We are happy to announce a new featured post series for small businesses here on Irresistibly Green. As a very small, family owned business, we get what a struggle it can be to keep a tiny business going while maintaining a work and family balance. Therefore, we want to spread a little love around to other businesses in the green and/or handmade community. Twice a month Irresistibly Green will feature a written interview with a small business owner.
This week we have an interview with Michelle Ferguson, owner and creator of Two Brothers Blankets. Michelle makes and sells handmade hats, scarves, blankets, headbands, photo props, and more. You know those adorable crocheted hats we see in so many professional newborn photos? Two Brothers Blankets can hook you up!
There are a multitude of Etsy sellers out there, and often times we want to buy what we know. So, lets get to know Two Brothers Blankets!
Were you always interested in crafting?
Actually no! I never considered myself crafty and didn’t find crafting very interesting at all for a long while! I still don’t do many “crafty” things other than crocheting but I do enjoy cake decorating and scrapbooking! I also hope to learn to knit one day soon!
What is the meaning behind the name of your business?
I have two sons, and after going through what seemed like a ton of name ideas I thought of Two Brothers Blankets, inspired by my two boys. My husband and close friends liked it as well so it stuck!
How do you balance caring for a family and running a small business?
It can be really hard sometimes, especially when the business gets busy. During the holidays it would get really stressful sometimes. But the most important thing to remember is family comes first and most everybody will understand that. I try to only work on orders when my kids are napping or after they go to bed. I also try to give myself enough turnaround time so that I’m not swamped with orders and always have plenty of time for my family.
What do you hope the future has in store for Two Brothers Blankets?
I hope it continues to grow and be as successful as it has been so far! I love that I am able to stay at home with my kids and still get to do something I love! As long as I am still able to do that and enjoy it I will be happy!
What advice do you have for others looking to start a small business?
Go for it! I never in a million years thought Two Brothers Blankets would be as successful as it has been, but it’s been a true blessing to be so successful! It takes time and dedication and sometimes it’s hard, but if it’s something you love doing then it’s worth it!
